What changes have you made to help?

We’ve enabled credit card payments for rent and utilities as a stop gap to tide you over until federal aid for hourly workers has been initiated in the coming weeks.

If I have documentable financial hardship caused by COVID-19 and can’t pay rent in full, on-time - what should I do?

We may be able to make select accommodations if you are able to prove financial hardship caused by the virus. Please send the following to membersupport@livehomeroom.com:

  1. A paragraph explaining your specific situation

  2. 2 Pay stubs from February showing higher net pay and 2 pay stubs from March showing decreased net pay

  3. 2 most recent bank statements

  4. A copy of your current renter’s insurance policy

  5. Contact information of your employer and direct supervisor (phone number and email)

  6. For rent deferment - 2018 & 2019 tax returns

What sort of accommodations can HomeRoom make to me if I can prove financial hardship?

Due to HomeRoom’s financial responsibilities to owners and the utility companies, we may offer some or all of the below options to a member:

  1. Allow split rent payments (50% on the first; 50% due on the 15th) without late fees for three months

  2. Single month rent deferment - to be paid over a 3-month period (reserved for most extreme cases)

Why can’t HomeRoom simply waive my rent?

HomeRoom is responsible to our 100+ residents to stay solvent (and provide them housing) during this tumultuous time. As a new company we have limited financial reserves and are not yet a profitable company we have very limited options in how we can help, unfortunately.

We rely heavily on the on-time rent payment of our members to pay homeowners’s and the utility companies on a monthly basis to keep our houses and ensure the lights stay on. This means we are not in a position to make exceptions for rent and utility payments at this time in order to stay financially solvent and provide housing to you and the other 20 HomeRoom houses citywide.

We’d love to be generous, and hope someday to be in the financial position to be able to, but as a young business we have limited financial reserves to help in that manner.

What resources do you recommend to improve my financial situation?

We have a number of members who have joined the remote gig economy through sites like Upwork.com, Fiverr.com etc. to supplement their income while being unable to work their typical hourly job. We can’t recommend this enough.

We also recommend hourly workers keep a keen eye on bills that are being rapidly passed by congress to help those in need - example - https://www.congress.gov/bill/116th-congress/house-bill/6201

What will happen if I choose not to pay rent - without proving financial hardship?

In order to preserve the community for all by keeping HomeRoom solvent through this period (by paying owners our rent and utilities) we will file all late and non-payments with credit agencies and take further action if and when necessary.
